What Does TPMS Mean?

Hand Holding Tire Gauge to Tire

You’ve probably seen the TPMS light flash on your dashboard during your Norman commute. What does TPMS mean? TPMS stands for “tire pressure monitoring system”, and it uses tire pressure sensors to monitor the air pressure in your tires. Learn how the TPMS system can help you keep your tires in check with the service center at Allen Samuels Volkswagen.

What Does the TPMS Do?

Your tire pressure monitoring system monitors the air pressure in your tires by using sensors that track the air pressure. When the system senses an irregular amount of pressure in either of the tires, the TPMS light will flash on your dashboard. Usually, this icon will look like a flat tire with an exclamation mark inside it, or it could just show the letters “TPMS”.

If you see the TPMS light on your dashboard, you should have your tires properly inflated. Leaving our tires underinflated can cause things like:

  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Decreased traction
  • Low load carrying capability

When your tires are properly inflated, you can avoid accidents on the Edmond roads and even save money by improving your vehicle’s fuel economy. That’s why it’s important to keep your TPMS system working properly.

Importance of Proper Tire Inflation

While leaving your tires underinflated can lead to problems on the Oklahoma City roads, overinflated tires can lead to just as many problems. We mentioned the problems that can occur from poor tire inflation, but here are some of the benefits of having your tires properly inflated:

  • Increase of water dispersion, which decreases the chances of hydroplaning
  • Reduces tread movement and increases the tire’s lifespan
  • Reduces rolling resistance and increases overall vehicle efficiency

How to Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

If you’re unsure of the proper amount at which your tires should be inflated, then consult your owner’s manual. If you need to fill your tires with air, there are plenty of inexpensive and free ways to do so, including:

  • Filling up your tires at a gas station
  • Taking your vehicle to a service center for full tire service
  • Using a bike pump
